The Basic Rules of Boating Etiquette

Navigating the waterways of Alabama and Tennessee involves a combination of technical skill and mutual respect for your fellow boaters. Whether you are cruising the Tennessee River near Chattanooga, anchoring in a quiet slough on Smith Lake, or enjoying a holiday weekend on Lay Lake or Logan Martin, following established etiquette rules ensures a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone. Good manners on the water are often the difference between a relaxing day and a stressful confrontation.

1. Understanding Right of Way

Navigating high-traffic areas requires more than just knowing your port from your starboard. When passing another vessel, always mind your distance and speed. If you encounter a stationary boat, give as wide a berth as possible to minimize wake disruption. In head-on situations, both boats should turn to starboard (right) to pass port-to-port. Remember that human-powered vessels (kayaks/canoes) have the right of way over sailboats, and sailboats have the right of way over powerboats. If your vessel's movement is restricted, you are the standing vessel, and others should navigate around you. If your current boat is difficult to maneuver in tight spaces, it might be time to browse our New Boats For Sale for models with newer handling technology.

2. Practice Proper Anchorage Etiquette

When you drop anchor on Smith Lake or Logan Martin, you are entering a temporary community. Follow the lead of boats already in the area regarding spacing and anchor lines so that if the wind shifts, all vessels move in the same direction. Never drop anchor in a marked channel. Keep speeds low when entering an anchorage, as swimmers may be in the water. To be a good neighbor, keep noise levels down after 8 PM and mind your generator use. If you are struggling with a difficult manual anchor system, our Parts department can help you upgrade to a more efficient setup.

3. Efficiency at the Ramp and Fuel Dock

Camaraderie is a major part of the boating life, and being efficient at shared facilities is a key part of that bond. At the boat ramp, save tasks like cleaning or gear-loading for the staging area rather than the ramp itself. Similarly, when fueling at the marina, be quick and move to a long-term docking space if you need to run errands or socialize. Always obey speed limits near docks and keep a lookout for others who may need a hand. If you’re ready to upgrade to a boat that's easier to launch and load, explore our Used Boats For Sale.

4. Preparing Your Passengers

As the captain, you are legally and socially responsible for the safety and behavior of everyone on board. Before launching from one of our locations, ensure your guests know what to bring and where the safety gear is located. Walk them through the layout of the vessel and identify who would take over in an emergency. If your passengers find the ride too rough or the layout inconvenient, a Mercury Repower or a full vessel upgrade can improve the experience for everyone.

5. Maintaining Your Vessel for the Community

A well-maintained boat is a safer boat for everyone on the water. Ensure your engine is reliable and your signaling devices are functional by visiting our Service Department. If you are considering a change, our Sell / Trade program provides professional evaluations to help you transition into a vessel that better suits your needs.
